When Did Everything Become So Serious?

Leesa Olive | SEP 22, 2026

I was thinking the other day… when did we all get so serious?

Not serious serious. I know there are bills to pay, work to do, families to look after and all the usual grown-up stuff that apparently comes with being an adult.

But somewhere along the way, I think we forget that we’re actually allowed to have a bit of fun too.

Even yoga has become serious.

You need the right leggings. The right mat. You need to know what all the poses are called. You should probably be able to touch your toes, stand on one leg without wobbling and look peaceful while doing it.

Meanwhile, half the time in my classes someone is facing the wrong direction, we’ve forgotten which leg we just did, someone falls out of a balance and we all have a laugh.

And you know what? That’s yoga too. Actually, that’s probably the kind of yoga I like best.

The older I get, the less interested I am in doing things perfectly and the more interested I am in actually enjoying them.

I want the trip where we laugh.

I want the yoga class where nobody cares if their left leg has somehow become their right.

I want dinners that go on too long, a glass of something nice, and conversations that wander all over the place.

I want to try things I might be completely hopeless at.

And I definitely don't want to reach an age where I decide I’m suddenly supposed to behave myself.

Maybe that’s one of the nice things about getting older.

You start to realise that quite a lot of the things you used to worry about really weren’t worth worrying about at all.

What other people think.

Whether you’re doing something “properly”.

Whether you look a bit silly.

Whether you’re too old to start something new.

Whether you should be doing something more productive with your time.

Sometimes you can just do something because you enjoy it.

There doesn’t need to be a goal attached to it.

You don’t need to improve yourself, burn calories, learn a new skill, tick something off a list or turn it into a side hustle.

You’re allowed to do things badly and still have a bloody good time doing them.

I think we need more of that.

More laughing at ourselves.

More saying yes to the things that sound fun.

More trying something new without needing to be good at it.

More weekends away, spontaneous lunches, bare feet, terrible dancing and always choosing the dessert.

Life gives us plenty of serious stuff without us adding extra.

So maybe this week, find something that serves absolutely no useful purpose other than making you happy.

And if you wobble, stuff it up or look slightly ridiculous while you’re doing it? Even better.

Until next time - remember Life doesn’t have to be quite so serious.
