You Don't Have to Say Yes to Everything
Leesa Olive | JUL 20
Can we all agree that saying "yes" can sometimes be exhausting?
Yes, I'll help.
Yes, I'll bring a plate.
Yes, I can do that.
Yes, I'll fit that in somehow.
Before you know it, your calendar looks like a game of Tetris and you're wondering why you're feeling a bit flat.
I've been there too.
Sometimes we say yes because we genuinely want to help.
Sometimes we don't want to disappoint anyone.
And sometimes... we just forget to check whether we actually have the time or energy.
The funny thing is, every time we say yes to something, we're usually saying no to something else.
Maybe it's an early night.
Maybe it's a quiet cup of tea.
Maybe it's a yoga class you've been looking forward to all week.
Or maybe it's just an hour where nobody needs anything from you.
I'm not saying we should all start saying no to everything.
That probably wouldn't go down too well. 😄
But I do think it's worth asking ourselves one little question before automatically saying yes.
Do I actually want to do this?
Or...
Do I just feel like I should?
There's a big difference.
One of the nicest things about yoga is that it teaches us to check in with ourselves.
How are we feeling today?
What does the body need?
What do we have the energy for?
Maybe we could do the same thing before filling every spare space in our week.
Sometimes the kindest thing you can do isn't squeezing one more thing into your diary.
Sometimes it's leaving a little space.
Space to breathe.
Space to rest.
Space for an unexpected coffee with a friend.
Or simply space to do... absolutely nothing.
And you know what?
The world usually keeps turning just fine.
So this week, before you automatically say yes, give yourself a moment.
A little pause.
You might discover that "not this time" feels pretty good too.
Until next time, leave a little room in your week for yourself. 🌿
